Look for a language, not a promise
Start with the languages listed on the profile and write your first message in the language you want to use. This helps you see whether you can make arrangements comfortably. “English” does not automatically mean native fluency: ask beforehand if detailed conversation matters to you. You can also explain that you would prefer Italian for practice.
A shared language leaves more room for conversation.
A specific city and a clear date
Being willing to travel does not mean someone is already at your destination. State the city, date and occasion: dinner in Rome, an exhibition in Florence or an event in Milan. Ask where the person is based and what travel is required. Wait for confirmation before changing bookings or plans.
Your first message can be simple
“I will be in Florence on Friday. I would like company for a two-hour dinner and prefer speaking English. Are you available?” This already includes the useful details. A neighbourhood is enough initially; there is no need to share a room number or accommodation details. Agree duration, meeting place, fee and expenses before confirming.
TAKE IT WITH YOU
- Write in your preferred language.
- Distinguish someone’s home city from willingness to travel.
- Confirm arrangements before changing your trip.
